Inserts:

Ego lugs are offered in a few different formats and understanding these can be helpful before placing and order to ensure you get the exact lug your after. What makes each format unique is the style of insert a particular lug uses. To be absolutely clear, the insert is the member that accepts the tensioning rod within the lug. These formats include, Axial, SE (Single End) and DE (Double End). By defualt, unless otherwise specified as SE or DE, the particular lug has an Axial insert. Below are examples of each.

Each type of insert has some degree of movement within the lug body and provides self alignment for the tensioning rod. A majority of our lug styles are offered in all 3 formats, with a few exceptions such as the "Centric" that is only offered in the Axial version, and the "Egonis" that is only offered in the SE and DE formats. All 3 types of inserts are great choices and more of a personal preference to the drum builder. Maybe a particular insert works better for your specific drum building application or maybe one looks better than the other. This is up to you to decide.

Please note: All "Mini" lugs do not come with a moving insert. Instead, the lug bodies are drilled and threaded all the way through. Pictures an further description regarding mini lugs coming soon.

Single Mounting vs. Double Mounting (Tube Lugs):

Another format we offer is the tube lug option. Tube lugs are only offered with the Axial insert. This means that any lug style offered with an Axial insert can be converted into a tube lug, such as a Flat Top Tube lug, Centric Tube Lug, Rounded Tube lug, and Maniac Tube lug. Tube lug lengths are measured from the center of one mounting hole to the center of the other mounting hole. The typical overall length of a tube lug is roughly 1 inch longer than its center to center mounting hole spacing. They are also available either Single Ended or Double Ended. We inventory a wide variety of lengths, however, this doesn't mean we can't custom fit your signiture Vinnie Paul Pearl snare drum for example. Custom tube lengths can be accomodated by request, but have a 4-6 week lead time. Below is an example of a 3 inch "Rounded" tube lug.

DE's (Double Endo's):

DE length is measured from the edge of one insert to the edge of the other insert. The example below shows a "Rounded" DE lug with a length of 2.5 inches.

Offset DE's (Double Endo's):

DE's can be offset like the example below. When measureing offset DE's, each end is measured from the center of the mounting hole to the edge of the insert. The example below shows the shorter insert being a total length of 1 inch and the other insert 3 inches giving the lug an overall length of 4 inches.

Hoop Lugs / Bass Claws:

"The bass drum hoops were fitted with clawless "hoop lugs," which are ingenious button-type protrusions. "These accepted the tensioning rods, elimintating the need for traditional claws."

--- Modern Drummer, March, 2005 ----

Rather than using bass claws, =ego= hoop lugs mount to the wood hoop creating a flange so to speak. Hoop lugs are designed for use with 12ply or thicker wood hoops and use a flat head socket cap screws that is counter sunk into the hoop. Flat head screws included. Below is an example of how they work.

Drilling Specs & Proper Tension Rod Length:

Axials:

If your using lugs with axial inserts, the tensioning rod length is the same as the distance from the bearing edge to the center of the mount hole. This applies when using tripleflange and diecast hoops. For example, suppose you are drilling the center of your mounting holes 2 inches from the edge of your shell. You would need 2 inch tensioning rods. If you drill the center of your mounting hole 1.75 inches from the edge of your shell you would need 1.75" tensioning rod, and so forth. Note: When using axial lugs, we do not recommend drilling the center of your mounting holes less than 1.5 inches from the edge of your shell.

SE's:

Single Ended lugs have a 1 inch insert. The insert is measured from the center of the mounting hole to the edge of the insert. The tensioning rod length is 0.75 inches shorter than the distance from the center of the mounting hole to the edge of the shell. For example, suppose you are drilling the center of your mounting hole 2 inches from the edge of your shell. You would need a 1.25 inch tensioning rod. (2" - 0.75" = 1.25") Note: When using SE's, we do not recommend drilling the center of the mounting hole less than 2 inches from the edge of the drum shell.
