 |
Steam bent drum shells have been coveted throughout history for their great sound characteristics. Before ply-wood shells were invented in the early 1900's wood drum shells were made from either solid logs that had been lathed inside and out, or from steam bent planks of wood known as single ply solid drum shells. The reason steam bent shells sound so good is becase they are made from one plank of wood that is bent and acutally "pre-stressed" giving the shell a higher pitch than a drum made of wood that is in it natural state. For example, stave drums use many blocks of wood known as "staves" that are glued together, but these blocks of wood are in the natural state as there is no outside force putting stress on the wood such as trying to bend it. Now we are not saying the stave shells are bad, they are very different sounding when it comes to comparing them to steam bent shells. This "pre-stressed" state of wood enhances the sound of the shell, giving the drum an impressive response. Steam bent drum shells also have a wide tuning range, if not one of the widest tuning ranges of any other wood shell on the market.
If a current shell is instock it will ship within a day or two, however, in most cases we are making these to order. Lead times are anywhere from 2 to 4 weeks.
Currently we offer 14" and 13" diameters up to 7" deep. So you can get a 14x5.5", a 14x6.5" etc. . Full kit sizes will be available summer of 2012!
